About Bethany
Bethany Welch, PA-C, DMSc is a clinician, executive, and writer who keeps finding the same thing — the presenting problem is almost never the real one.
She began her career as a licensed clinician in trauma and surgical critical care before moving into senior executive roles in large academic and corporate healthcare institutions. As Clinical Operations Director for the largest academic family medicine program in the United States at Jefferson Health, she oversaw 55 providers, more than 200 staff, and care delivery for over 30,000 patients annually. She currently leads at the division level at a Fortune 500 healthcare organization — work that has put her inside succession conversations, talent reviews, and leadership development programs long enough to notice what's actually happening in them.
Her writing examines the gap between the presenting problem and the real one — in leaders, in organizations, and occasionally in her own mirror. She is completing Ready Next; Going Nowhere, a forthcoming book on bench stagnation, succession failure, and the identity mechanisms that quietly determine who moves forward and who doesn't. Her essays appear at bethanywelch.com.
She has published in NEJM Catalyst and the Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science, and has guest lectured at the Wharton School. She is based in Philadelphia.
